Optimizing CBM
An optimized policy for the interpretation of inspection data from a CBM program at a nuclear reactor station
Hydro-dyne seals perform an important function in some CANDU type nuclear reactors. During refueling, they seal the connection between the fuelling machine and the end fitting of the reactor fuel channels, preventing the leakage of heavy water from the reactor. At a nuclear power plant 4 reactors employ 8 hydro-dyne sealed refueling mechanisms...

A survey of signal processing and decision technologies for CBM
Hundreds of theoretical and practical research papers on CBM appear every year in scientific journals, conference proceedings and technical reports. In this chapter we provide an overview of recent developments in the diagnostocs and prognostics of systems.

CASE STUDY - PUMPS
The Twisdraai Plant of SASOL, Secunda, South Africa showed preliminary interest in optimizing their condition-based replacement policy. The plant utilizes vibration analysis in maintenance decisions for several types of equipment, such as for circulating pumps. This paper reports development of a condition-based replacement policy based on vibration analysis data and a proportional-hazards model. The software EXAKT was used to produce the results...

Optimization of Bellis & Morcom 3rd-stage piston ring CBM model
This report is an evaluation of EXAKT at a steel mill. The discussion focuses on data collection and manipulation. A brief discussion on the capability and usefulness of EXAKT is also included in the conclusion. The objective was to determine whether EXAKT could be effectively utilized in a commercial manufacturing environment to improve the results obtained with current (PM) models.

Optimizing condition-based maintenance decisions for vibration monitored bearings
We report the development of an optimal maintenance program based on vibration monitoring of critical bearings on machinery in the food processing industry. Statistical analysis of vibration data is undertaken using the software package EXAKT to establish the key vibration signals that are necessary for risk estimation.

CBM (on-condition maintenance) benefits analysis
We should compare the cost effectiveness of an existing maintenance policy with that of a proposed new one, in order to project the benefits of proceeding with that proposed policy. By a policy in CBM we mean, how we will define and declare a potential failure...

Optimizing a Condition Based Maintenance Program with Gearbox Tooth Failure
The EXAKT CBM optimizing methodology was applied to a set of experimental condition data measurements in order to develop an optimal interpretation process or policy. An optimal policy is a procedure for data interpretation, which, if applied consistently in a CBM program, minimizes the cost of maintenance of a physical asset or maximizes its availability...

CBM Optimization
What do we mean by CBM (condition based maintenance) optimization? We mean, simply, how to "correctly" interpret and act upon data from our condition monitoring (CM) program. Is the decision to act, and the action itself the "right" one? The "best" one? How do we define "best"? What does the "best" time and action depend on?

The Elusive P-F Interval
This article has been rewritten - The new version is available here.
The P-F interval is a deceptively simple idea. Deceptive, because it takes for granted that we have previously defined "P" (the potential failure). Of the two concepts, āPā and āP-Fā, it is the former, however, that poses the greater challenge. Therefore, before addressing the P-F interval, we need to determine when and how to declare a potential failure.
